About half a year ago I found a piece of sidewalk chalk on our balcony.
How it got there is a mystery to me. We live by the water, and we don´t have any upstairs neighbors. It could have found his way to our balcony from a boat. Or perhaps, like one of my coworkers suggested, a crow came by to give me a ´message´…
Perhaps you wonder what I decided to do with that piece of chalk
For a while, I left it lying around on a wooden stool in our living room. And then one day, after meditation, I opened my eyes and there. And suddenly an idea popped into my head that made me very happy. It was like that piece of chalk was giving me a message.
Was this the message it was giving me?
What if I used that piece of chalk to write fun quotes on the sidewalk in random places around town, to be noticed by people passing by and hopefully make them smile?
And so it happened. I bought a pack of colored chalk, which came in handy when my cousin and her three young kids came to stay with us that weekend. The kids played around with it in our corridor, which inspired me to get creative as well.
The next morning, I was on my way to my barista shift, when inspiration struck. It was early enough that it was still quiet in the streets, and I felt that nervousness and excitement of doing something secretive. Right there on the sidewalk I wrote down my first words: ´you are amazing´.
A man walked by, saw me writing down these words on the sidewalk and said ´thank you´ with the biggest smile, followed by ´and you are also amazing´. It made me so happy.
After my barista shift, I took the same route home, feeling tired but content after a day of work, when I noticed my own words on the sidewalk. I had completely forgotten about it, and my own words put a smile on my face. Even if I do it just for myself, I made at least 1 person happy.
A few days later I was having coffee with a fellow student of the 6th Sense Academy by the water on Canary Wharf, one of the business districts of London. I showed her my pack of sidewalk chalk, happy as a clam.
She shared my excitement, and we decided to write down some quotes right there on the sidewalk. A passerby immediately noticed us and was happily surprised to read our quotes. A woman stopped to take a picture and told us: ´I am late for work, but this is so much fun´.
If you look up South Quay Walks on Google Maps you will find our creations in one of the pictures, as a memory to this day.
I have no idea how this adventure will continue, but every now and then I feel inspired to chalk away in the streets of London. The crow´s ´message´ has landed, I interpreted it as:
Go play!
Have you forgotten how to have fun? Consider this as your reminder to go and play as well.
Enjoy, Jessica
