How has your heart been feeling lately?
Two weeks ago, we moved from our temporary place by the sea to our longer-term home in the center of Malaga. It felt like a small move, since most of our stuff is still in storage in London. I noticed that this new place feels a lot more like home than our place by the sea.
As I am writing this our cat Rose is lying next to me on the couch. We enjoy spending time on our rooftop terrace, which feels cooler after a night of intense rain. The thunderstorms and rainfall have washed away the draught and heat from the last couple of months, creating space for some fresh new air.
The rain and thunderstorms weren´t the only elements at play. Before the skies opened and the rain came pouring down, I was shaking in my bed for about 6 seconds. I didn´t realize it at first, but it was an earthquake. Later I heard that the effects were much more noticeable in Granada, not too far from here.
The last time I experienced an earthquake was when we lived in Geneva. I had forgotten about that one, but my partner Jeroen remembered. For me, moments like these serve as a reminder to listen to what nature has to tell us, both the external elements and our own nature: our body, soul and heart.
My own heart felt a little heavy lately. My brain, which loves having an explanation for everything, had found a reason for it. 😉 Now that we live in our new home, we’ve opened new doors in the bureaucratic maze of living in Spain. The last few weeks I have focused on moving my coaching business from the UK to Spain. Luckily, I have received help with the process, because it can be quite a labyrinth. I have noticed that, apart from the practical aspect, this process had an impact on my heart as well.
In a way, it felt nice to let my heart speak. By rounding up the administrative part of our 5 years in the UK, I felt like I was saying goodbye to that period. I also felt gratitude for the wonderful years we got to experience there. Our amazing home, the wonderful people and the special memories that London and life on the ´island´ gave us. Just like our years in Geneva, this period will forever hold a special place in my heart.
When it comes to the Netherlands, where I was born, I don´t feel like I have to say goodbye. At its core, that will always be my rooted home. I realize that the concept of ´home´ is an interesting one. You can feel at home within yourself, but the place we live will also have an impact on our inner world.
The heart was this month´s theme of the monthly Satsang Inside Wisdom I hosted. Through exercises, we found a way to gently open a back door to our hearts and opened ourselves up to what wanted to unfold from there. We shared with each other the unique experiences we each had: there was room for curiosity, resistance, chaos, joy, darkness, protection, heaviness, sadness, grief and excitement.
We all experienced that there are different layers to the feelings in our heart. Some layers are close to the surface, while others are harder to reach at this moment in time. And that is okay. Recognizing, honouring and sharing all of that brought a depth to our togetherness. It felt soft, comforting and safe. I feel grateful.
